5TH WEDNESDAY PRESENTATION ON ZOOM

Special Zoom Presentation – “Going On Your First DXpedition”
Join SFARC on July 31st @ 7:30 PM in the Club Zoom Room as Alan (K7AR) will give a presentation on setting up for your first DXpedition. As a follow-up to his excellent presentation on FT8 Fox/Hound mode, Alan will go into what it takes to plan, set up for, and work a DXpedition. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in what goes into an operation, gaining an appreciation of those that make it possible for hams to work exotic locations, and understanding the challenges involved in traveling abroad with radio equipment. All are welcome to join!

Looking Forward

Field Day was amazing this year, even though the temperatures were significantly higher this time around. We made plenty of contacts, but more than that we shared a weekend of great conversations, tasty food, and lasting memories. A shout-out goes to all the candidates who took their amateur radio licensing exam at the Georgetown Airport hangar. Congratulations on your achievements, whether that’s getting your Technician license or upgrading to obtain further privileges on the ham bands!

This month we will NOT have a VE exam session, and we will resume testing on the first Monday of August.

Our club meetings are held at 7:30 PM on the second Friday of the month, and this month’s meeting on the 12th features Jeff (KM6RGO), who will be presenting the 2024 Field Day Recap and James (N6OZH), with a great talk on identifying, tracking down, and dealing with an errant transmitter causing interference on a public safety radio system. For those of you who regularly participate in our monthly RDF events (or are interested in RDF) this is one presentation you don’t want to miss!

Hot RF Nights, SFARC’s annual show-and-tell event, will be held on Saturday, June 13th this year. Greydon (KC6SLE) and the crew of volunteers have put in extra time and effort to make this year’s event the best one yet. Having it in the month of July gives us more daylight into the late hours, and Saturday gives families and friends who would otherwise be at work the opportunity to come out and spend some quality time learning about everyone’s portable radio setups. We’ll even have a food truck this year, so come early at 4 PM and leave the worries about where to get dinner behind!

Our monthly club breakfast will be held at Wings (by Auburn Municipal Airport) on the 27th. This month will also see the resumption of Fox Hunting after the breakfast, and we have a special fox tender this time around. I’m really curious as to where it’ll be hidden, and I look forward to challenging this month’s event.

At last, but not least, we will host Alan (K7AR) for a special “Going On Your First DXpedition” presentation on Zoom the night of the 31st. Alan did a wonderful job presenting FT8’s Fox/Hound mode to the club in May, and curious hams wanted to know what goes into a DXpedition. Even if you don’t have immediate plans for traveling to remote locations and operating amateur radio, come join us to gain an appreciation for what goes into such an operation!

Have a wonderful and safe Independence Day! Looking forward to seeing all of you at our events!

Watts Up This Week

Are you all recovered from your Field Day hangover? Preliminary results are showing that SFARC made over 3,200 contacts = Wow!!!! The first batch of pics are available on the website photos page. If you have photos from the event, please upload them before you forget @ www.w6ek.org/media/upload

REPEATER USAGE THIS COMING WEEKEND
The Western States Endurance Runs will have primary use of the W6EK 2m and 440 repeaters (linked in analog) starting Saturday morning at 4AM, continuing to Sunday around 11AM. Please provide priority access to the Western States Team. If you need to use the repeater, please keep contacts short and migrate QSOs to another local repeater. There will be no Coffee Break Net on Saturday and Sunday.

CLUB BREAKFAST @ MEL’S DINER IN AUBURN
Join SFARC this Saturday at 7:30 for breakfast. Come early and come hungry!

IT’S GETTING HOT IN HERE!

We’re only 17 days, 21 hours, and 2 minutes from Hot RF Nights (at the time of this email). Are you coming? While not required, we’d love to get an idea of how many plan to attend so we can provide some rough numbers. If you’ve got a few extra minutes, head over to www.w6ek.org/activities/hotrfnights/rsvp and RSVP. We could also use your help promoting the event on other nets throughout the Sacramento Valley. We’ve made it simple, here’s the script:

“Join SFARC on July 13th for Hot RF nights. It’s like a carnival for amateur radio operators and community service volunteers. Hams and served agencies from all over Northern California will be showing off mobile radio installs, go kits, and emergency response vehicles and equipment. All our welcome to show off your gear or just attend and enjoy some dinner from Fat Cat Catering, and a Root Beer or Orange Creamsicle float to stay cool. Free bottled water is available to all in attendance. Setup begins at 3PM in the main parking lot of Auburn Crossroads Church with the event starting at 4pm. You don’t need to be a ham to attend, all individuals or clubs are welcome to setup a table as well. More information, and the address for the event, can be found @ hotrfnights.w6ek.org ! If you plan to show off some gear, please RSVP using the website.”
